Our lovely van, named Ethel because of her old age, is going to be up for sale
very soon as we reach the end of our travels through Australia.
Features/Stuff you need to know
- Queensland rego until January 2005 (but may re-register to WA for ease of
sale if you are a WA resident)
- 1975, 2-litre Type 2
- Excellent condition, engine has been well looked after
- Extra air scoops added to keep the engine running cooler (much needed in
Australian climate), and a further grill fitted on the engine bay to draw
off more heat
- Tasty mag wheels and good, solid tyresn
- Prior to us buying, was in same family for 15 years and owned by a mechanic
- Van has been fitted out this year with a sleeping area, a large storage
area to fit three good-sized suitcases and a cabinet with shelving (but no
fridge or sink)
- Windows tinted all round
- Has served us well from Cairns down to Perth via East Coast and Tassie
- We'll also include the following items:
- Mini black/white TV
- 1 esky
- kettle (gas and electric) and pots
- plates, cups, bowls and cutlery
- 2 fans (one box fan, one pedestal)
- 1 fan heater for those cold nights
- 6-way extension plug for use on powered site
- crooklock
- clip-on lamp (when parked at powered site)
- 10-litre petrol canister
- Whatever oil, petrol, flashlube (fuel additive) we have left over
The first person to view the van will want to buy it, just as we did. Naturally,
you'll want a mechanic to give it a check first, just as we did. Here's what
ours said:
"I see kombis from time-to-time but they're usually falling to piece,
rust everywhere. This is the best kombi I've seen in years, you can tell it's
been looked after."
Another? Speaking to Karl from Road Runner Autos (VW specialist in Cairns):
Karl: "That's a great van - you've got an investment there."
Me: "I just didn't want to lose money on whatever van I got."
Karl: "Shit, to do that you'd have to wrap it around a tree!"
We haven't :-)

Interior - clean, re-upholstered a few years ago.

When we got the van, there was nothing in it!

Nice mag wheels!

Another side-on view.

The van getting fitted out for travels.

Lockable storage area - we fit 2 suitcases, petrol can, sports bag, masks, snorkels
and fins (2 sets) and more!

Full-size double bed. It does not retract, unfortunately - on a fixed base -
but more sleeping space than most kombis.

Double-door cabinet with middle shelf. Storage for food, portable gas cooker
and cutlery/crockery
What's it gonna cost?
We're asking for $6,250 $5,700 ono. When you see the van for yourself,
you'll realise it's not over the odds. We've seen a lot of kombis, and some are
rust-buckets on wheels. So don't get something that looks like this:

... get one like this:

... and see how easily you sell it when it's your turn to say farewell!
